Annual report on activities of Hurrarc for 2008

The HURRARC was able to achieve a lot of goals in the year 2008, after returning home from the Republic of Guinea, where HURRARC had been operating as an advocacy group for the rights of the refugees in the Republic of Guinea-Conakry.

For the effectiveness of the job, we were able to organise the refugee groups into a single body called CRAG (Council of Refugee Groups), which worked out a lot of assistance to the urban and the camp refugees, covering the sierra leoneans, the liberians and the ivorians.

Back home, HURRARC was able to lobby with the new government of President Ernest Bai Koroma, to arrange the then anxious needs of the oversea workers from Iraq, who had got their employments cancelled by the former government, as they were finding it very hard to get them returned to their jobs, or file in new applications. We were able to bring them to the Labor Minister and the line ministries concerned.

In march, 2008, we were able to write project proposals for certain organizations that we created in our return, to help the poor and impoverished people of Kamaa chiefdom and the Gbense. Among them is the provisional vision building actions for Kamaa (Provibak) the Koedondonya, the Gbonsu, and the Youths Progressive Union, who have to some greater extent become the channels of assistance to the people in the community.

We were able to move to the Sierra Rutile, in Moriba town and the Mobinbi, to assess the ongoing human rights abuses, violations and environmental degradations that were and are still continuing with the risk of flooding.

We came to Freetown, and on the 12th September, we were able call a press conference in the Amnesty International Office at Pademba Road, where journalists and members of the electronic media, who also helped to air out the message to the nation and the international bodies on the 17th sept. 2008, when we spoke at the radio U.N. at Aberdeen.

The HURRARC was able to affiliate with other youth organizaions like the Youths Arise, the African Youths for Peace and Developments (aypad), The Same Boat and The Cleans Alone, with whom we are sharing the same office space the Shelter for Africa House at National Stadium Compound.

We have brought many cases to the police, especially the ross road and the central police, who could testify that we have been overseeing the course of certain cases around, only to make sure that they are rightfully addressed. Therefore, we are on the promotion of human rights and gender equality campaigns since we returned, especially the areas of gender violence.

HURRARC was able to set up an european branch currently in Italy, whose directors have provided the organization with office equipment, a new website, and many fundings, even the official registrations of the group this year and for 2009.

HURRARC went on the human rights assessment tour in Kono on october, and conducted series of interviews with the populace, the affected property owners associations, and the longbench youths that led the dec. 13th 2007 demonstration, in which two of them were killed. We have since then been lobbying with the government and the companies, to make sure that the due rights and the liberties of the people and the workers are respected and promoted.

For the closing of the year, the HURRARC was able to conduct the annual general meetings on the 10 th december, 2008, to commemorate the 60th Annual Birthday of the Universal Declarations of Human Rights and Humanity.

We were able to bring out a lot of concerns over the state of human rights in the state, which need to be fully respected and promoted by all state apparatus.
Therefore, the HURRARC is much more ready to work assiduously with all and sundry, with and along the rights and legality so far conferred upon us, to emancipate, uplift, protect and defend both the universal and the fundamental declarations of human rights, and all resolutions and treaties that surrounds and uphold the questions of human rights and humanity.
