Maternal mortality in Sierra Leone

Thousands of women and girls die every year in Sierra Leone as a result of treatable complications of pregnancy and childbirth.

According to Amnesty International these deaths are not natural or inevitable, but preventable and unacceptable. This is not just a health emergency; it is a human rights scandal.

Amnesty International has published, on September 2009, a report on maternal mortality as a human rights issue. The report Out of Reach: The Cost of Maternal Health in Sierra Leone is downloadable from Amnesty International website.
